About the project
Elevation is an immersive journey along the scenic route of Blackstone Edge, using binaural sound, which creates an “audio 3D effect”, to tell tales of those who walked this land before us, and encouraging audiences to take a moment to listen deeply to the sounds of Rochdale in the distance.
From the Romans to the Radical Rochdalians, Elevation traces the ancient path across the moorlands, weaving together history, place and community into a single, unforgettable experience. Although each listener travels with their own pair of headphones, the journey is experienced as a collective, individual and shared at the same time.
Bring Elevation to your community.
Elevation was born from Rochdale’s landscape and the stories of its people but the concept is endlessly transportable. Every community has its own history, its own voices and its own landscape waiting to be reimagined.
If you have a hill, a park, a moorland, a historic route, or any open space that holds meaning for your community, we would love to talk. Breaking Barriers can work with you and your local community to create a bespoke immersive audio experience. We’ll gather the voices, stories, and memories of the people who know that place best, and weave them into a journey that audiences will never forget.
Whether you are a local authority looking to activate a public space, a cultural organisation seeking a distinctive outdoor commission, or a community group wanting to celebrate the place you call home, Elevation can be shaped around you.
